Bitcoin Price Is Crashing (Again) Because China Says It Isn't Real
HONG KONG (AP) — The biggest Bitcoin exchange in China said Wednesday that it's no longer
accepting yuan deposits, dealing another setback to the virtual currency.
BTC China's announcement on its Twitter-like Sina Weibo account comes two weeks after China's central bank said the country's banks and payments systems were barred from handling the virtual currency.
The exchange said that "due to the reasons that everyone knows, BTC China has to temporarily stop its yuan account recharging functions."
Account holders can still top up their accounts using Bitcoins and withdraw yuan, the exchange said.
"BTC China will continue to operate. Please continue to monitor our website, we will try to offer another way to recharge," it said.
The price of Bitcoins tumbled after the midday announcement, sinking as low as 2,503 yuan ($412) by early evening after starting the day at 3,755 yuan ($618).
The Chinese central bank warned earlier this month that Bitcoins don't have any legal status or monetary equivalent and shouldn't be used as currency, adding that financial institutions and payment systems could not sell, trade or store Bitcoins.
On the popular Tokyo-based Mt. Gox exchange, the price of Bitcoins also tumbled since the beginning of the Chinese crackdown. There, the cybercurrency fell below $600 on Wednesday after trading around $900 over the weekend.
The measures reflect growing concern by authorities that the cybercurrency, which is created, distributed and authenticated independently of any bank or government, could pose a viable alternative to China's tightly controlled yuan, which is not freely convertible.
The relative anonymity of Bitcoins holds out the promise of being able to spend money across the Internet without scrutiny. Despite wild swings in value, the cybercurrency has been moving toward broader acceptance, with a growing number of companies accepting Bitcoins, which can be converted into cash.

In this day and age, Bitcoin is as real of a currency as the US dollar. Gone are the days when we actually held money in our hands. Since the USD is no longer backed by gold at a ratio of 1:1, our monetary system can crash at a moment's notice. It is being propped up by nothing more than confidence.
Currency systems such as Bitcoin are the future. These currency systems will force change, as they will help sweep out government corruption by providing a way for all people to exchange goods and services outside of government regulation and taxation. The governments will no longer have the capability to adequately siphon funds into dark corners where its use is not tracked and reported in a transparent manner. Change is coming.

When Bitcoin reaches a point where I can buy food, fuel, housing and the like with it, then it will be a competitor with sovereign currencies. But it is nowhere near that now and shows no sign of getting there. But if Bitcoin does get to a point of wide acceptance, then it becomes no problem for governments to collects sales and income taxes on transactions carried out with it. So your vision is a pipe dream.

Good on China for rejecting a totally made up currency backed by nothing.

Huffpo Sucksballz (YoucanttellmeImnotanon)
The US Dollar is backed by nothing
we no longer use the gold standard
What will the government give you if you take $1 to the fed? They wouldn't trade you anything for it.
Its basic macroeconomics, since gold is no longer the standard, all currencies are backed by nothing but faith. So anything people consider as a currency is accepted as money.
basic macroeconomics..... but you don't study anything do you?

1 year ago, 1 bitcoin = $26.00
Today, 1 bitcoin = $525.00
Do the people who write these articles actually understand what a "crash" would be?
especially considering bitcoins are 2000% more valuable today than they were a year ago....
19 DEC 1:29 AM

Do you?
December 1st, 1 bitcoin = $1200
Today, 1 bitcoin = 525
losing over half it's value in 18 days doesn't constitute a crash to you?
19 DEC 1:50 AM

What else is new. Money needs a government to back it and secure it. No matter how much libertarians may scream that math and markets can do the job, no government on this planet will ever give up control of a so fundamental form of control and power, especially countries like China. Money is a form of control.

Money does not need a government. People tease and do commerce with no need of country. You would be the same person during the 1800s would say that an American currency would never work. That only states could secure your dollar. We are moving to complete global commerce no different than the states moved to a national one. People will have more faith in virtual global currency that aren't tied to countries. You need to look a head rather than always what's just in front of you.

The biggest problem with bitcoin is that you don't physically own coins in ur hand except for digital or imaginary coins. They should use goldcoins which will actually work.

Bitcoin genuinely did have economic value whilst SilkRoad was running.
The ability to buy and sell illegal narcotics with untraceable money through SilkRoad had inherent value to some people and the market set the price accordingly.
The moment SilkRoad was busted bitcoin was of little value to anyone.
